Macro secures Emirates Air Line contract

Macro has been awarded a new five-year contract by Transport for London (TfL), to manage the operations of the Emirates Air Line. The news comes as the cable car celebrates its five year anniversary.

Built in support of the East London Docklands regeneration project, it is the UK's first and only urban cable car, which since its launch in June 2012 has welcomed over eight million visitors. At a height of 90 metres, the Emirates Air Line is the highest observation point over the Thames, spanning just over 1km across the River. It connects local residents and visitors between the Greenwich Peninsula (near The O2) and the Royal Docks (near ExCeL London).

Macro runs all the Emirates Air Line's operations on behalf of TfL, providing front of house services, security and maintenance since the project's completion in 2012. The cable car boasts the highest customer satisfaction figures across the TfL network. The Emirates Air Line serves as both a leisure attraction – and a normal transport mode for local Londoners. In total, over 1.5 million customers travel on it each year.

Ahead of its anniversary celebrations at the end of June, the cable car hosted its first paid dining event on-board the cabins. The one-night only experience was catered for by chef Jimmy Garcia, as 17 of the cabins were transformed to include dining tables with room for four guests. This unusual three-course pop-up event was held as part of the Evening Standard's London Food Month and during the evening the Emirates Air Line remained open to the public, with staff managing general day-to-day duties alongside the exclusive event.
