Graduates – your FM career starts here…

By Adelaide Forbes, Head of Human Resources, Macro

A career in facilities management can be as diverse as it is exciting.  No two days are ever the same, and as a facilities manager you’ll be part of the heartbeat of your organisation.  But where do you start your career?  Where will you get the best on-the-job training, combined with formal learning and access to a portfolio of buildings across diverse locations, giving you the widest possible exposure to the world of FM?

Macro is the FM division of construction giant Mace, the company voted by Jobcrowd to be the top company for graduates to work for.  So what can aspiring facilities managers expect when joining the Macro graduate scheme?

There is no such thing as the ‘graduate gofer’ at Macro.  Our graduates instantly become part of our teams and can expect to hit the ground running.  Over the two year programme they will be performing critical functions such as assisting with mobilisations, running sites and managing operational delivery; as well as getting exposure to what it’s like to be a line manager.

From a formal learning point of view we run a further development programme supported by Imperial College, as academic partner, which provides a range of structured learning.  It gives the junior manager the right mix of leadership and technical training that will enable them to become experienced and accomplished middle managers in our business.

We encourage the development and recognition of professional competence, through chartered accreditation with RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors).  The focus is on how the graduate can add value to our company, client, community and colleague and ensure they are driving their own development.   Every graduate has a sponsor, and a quarterly meeting with the managing director.  There is a lot of visibility with the senior leadership team, who are extremely supportive of the scheme.

Opportunity is a core value at Macro, and when it comes to career progression, there are opportunities within specific client accounts, or by moving to a different client if that best suits an individual’s skills and development aspirations.  As we win international contracts, we regularly relocate our existing team members to get sites up and running and stable quickly, as well as injecting the Macro way of working.  So if an international career is something that appeals, we have the geographical coverage to make that possible.

At Macro, you’re never just the ‘graduate’, we focus on your skillset and interests and provide the right opportunities to enable development.  You are part of our talent pipeline and the future success of our business.
