The impact of LED technology

In the last few years concerns over climate change have led to a growing number of Green Buildings, which are created through environmentally responsible and resource-efficient building life-cycles. This has helped create awareness for more sustainable solutions and LED technology has played a particularly significant role.

Local developments such as the recent changes in the UAE's building regulations, Abu Dhabi's sustainable living vision 2030, and the introduction of green building codes by Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE) are having a major effect on the MEP sector, encouraging the industry to respond to the need for reliable and energy efficient solutions.

There have been a number of breakthroughs in sustainable energy MEP technologies with efficient energy practices, including geo-thermal systems, water-reduction technologies, electricity minimizing engineering as well as "LEED" energy solutions. Integrated energy solutions that result in less waste, reduced costs and more efficiency through energy conservation and responsible energy production will be a major growth driver in the Middle Eastern MEP market and I believe that organizations will have to adapt in order to remain competitive.

Adapting new technologies also has a number of long term advantages for MEP operators, allowing clients long term cost effective solutions and overall savings. Up to 50% can be saved on electricity bills every month for lighting only which indicate an overall saving of around 10-15% on the entire bill.

We find that clients and end users now prefer LED lights due to the long life they provide combined with the low maintenance costs. They're also instant which means there is no run up time compared to other lamps and fluorescent tubes.

Another advantage with LED is that they're flicker free. Switch start and discharge luminaires exhibit flicker whilst in operation and this effect can be dangerous where moving or rotating machinery is in place and this can cause accidents.

An example is the new Skytile technology, which is a high performance LED flat panel that consumes 50% less energy than fluorescent lights and generates a 60% saving on running costs. It is practically maintenance free and doesn't flicker or fail which eliminates manpower engagement and disruption of the workplace during maintenance.

These light fittings are very practical for commercial offices, warehouses and call centers which are operational 24/7 all days of the year. We have put a number of proposals through for the replacement of light fittings within common areas of residential and commercial buildings, especially at the entrance or parking areas and other areas where usage or foot fall is higher when compared to other parts of the building.

Other advantages with LED lights are that they are glass and mercury free, and produce no ultraviolet or infrared which offers wider application potential. They have no fragile filaments or tube and are generally more resistant to adverse weathers. Finally, they cause less harm to the environment when compared with lamps and tube lights during disposal.

Due to the many advantages, it is no surprise that this technology is increasingly used by clients, and that it is constantly developing. The Middle East sector is growing and the technologies available for saving energy or environmentally friendly products are going to play a key role in sustainability. It's fantastic to see more clients aware of the benefits, which ultimately will create a better future for generations to come.
